They decide how many bedrooms they need, whether they want a swimming pool and how much outside space they would like. They save photographs of whitewashed villas, modern apartments and traditional townhouses. Then they begin scrolling through property portals, hoping the right home will somehow reveal itself.

But there is a more important decision to make first.

Before choosing the property, choose the life you want to live.

What Do You Want Everyday Life to Look Like?

Buying a home abroad is not simply about choosing a building. You are also choosing how you will spend your mornings, where you will shop, who you will meet and how easily you can do the things you enjoy.

A beautiful villa may seem irresistible online, but how will you feel if you need to drive every time you want to visit a shop or restaurant?

A stylish apartment in the centre of town may appear convenient, but will it suit you if you value silence, privacy and plenty of outside space?

Neither option is inherently better. The right choice depends on the lifestyle you are hoping to create.

Think beyond holidays and imagine an ordinary Tuesday in your new home. Where would you go in the morning? Would you walk to a local café, take the dog along the beach or spend the first few hours of the day working from a terrace?

Would you like to be surrounded by activity or return home to somewhere peaceful? Do you want to know your neighbours and become part of a local community, or would you prefer greater independence and privacy?

These everyday details will shape your experience far more than an extra bedroom or a particularly impressive kitchen.

Coastal Living Is Not One Single Lifestyle

It is easy to assume that living near the sea automatically creates a certain type of life. In reality, coastal locations can feel very different from one another.

Some areas are lively throughout the year, with permanent residents, local businesses, schools and established communities. Others are highly seasonal, becoming busy during the summer and much quieter during the winter.

You may dream of being able to walk to the beach, but it is worth considering what else you would like within walking distance. Are there shops, restaurants and services nearby? Will you need a car for most daily activities? Does the area feel connected during every season?

Being 500 metres from the sea can be wonderful, but it is only one part of the lifestyle equation.

Town, City, Countryside or Resort?

Spain offers an enormous variety of places to live.

A historic town can give you beautiful architecture, neighbourhood markets and the feeling of being part of traditional Spanish life. A city may offer better transport links, more cultural events and a broader choice of restaurants and services.

A countryside property could provide land, tranquillity and privacy, although it may also require more maintenance and make a car essential. Resort living can offer security, shared facilities and an international community, but it may feel less connected to everyday Spanish life.

There is no universally perfect location. There is only the location that fits your priorities.

Consider the Entire Year

Many people first fall in love with Spain while visiting during the summer. The streets are busy, restaurants are full and the days revolve around sunshine and outdoor living.

However, buying a property is different from booking a holiday.

If you plan to live in Spain permanently or spend extended periods here, consider how the area feels throughout the year. Is it active in winter? Are local restaurants and services open outside the main holiday season? Does the property have suitable heating as well as air conditioning?

It is also worth thinking about the orientation of the property. A terrace that receives full sun throughout a summer afternoon may be too hot to use, while a home that appears pleasantly cool in August could feel dark during winter.

The best property is one that supports the way you want to live across every season.

Think About Connection

Your lifestyle is also influenced by how easily you can reach the people and places that matter to you.

If you expect regular visitors from the UK or elsewhere, proximity to an airport may be important. If you intend to travel frequently, access to a railway station or major road could make a significant difference.

You may want to live somewhere with an established international community, particularly while you are finding your feet. Alternatively, you may deliberately want greater immersion in Spanish language and culture.

If you are relocating with children, schools and family activities will naturally influence the search. If you are planning for retirement, healthcare, accessibility and the ability to live comfortably without driving everywhere may become more important over time.

These considerations are not as visually exciting as sea views or a beautiful swimming pool, but they are often what determines whether a move works in the long term.

Decide Which Compromises You Can Make

Most property searches involve some compromise. The key is knowing which compromises will affect your happiness and which ones will not.

You may be happy to accept a smaller house in exchange for being able to walk into town. You might choose to live further inland to gain more space and better value. Perhaps you would sacrifice a private pool if the beach were only a few minutes away.

Create a list of lifestyle priorities before making a list of property requirements. Divide them into what is essential, what would be desirable and what you could comfortably live without.

That clarity can prevent you from being distracted by a property that looks spectacular but does not support the life you actually want.

Start With the Life, Then Find the Home

The most successful property searches begin with questions rather than listings.

How do you want your days to feel? What would make life easier, richer or more enjoyable? Which activities and relationships do you want your new location to support?

Once those answers are clear, the property search becomes much more focused.

The right home is not always the largest, newest or most impressive one. It is the home that allows you to live in the way you imagined when you first decided to move.
